What is trauma?

Many of us have heard the word “trauma” but can not quite relate to what it actually means. Derived from the Greek word meaning “wound”, trauma in its simplest definition, is the internal response to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope, leading to lasting negative effects on their well-being.

In the words of world-renowned physician and addiction expert, Gabor Maté, “Trauma is not what happens to you, it is what happens inside you” in response a distressing event.

The impacts of trauma can be hard to recognize and leave us feeling fearful, unworthy, detached from ourselves and others and trapped in shame.

EMDR is one approach that uses eye movement called bilateral stimulation (BLS) to help your brain process difficult memories, so they don't keep affecting you today.
